Government forces arrested two Chinese nationals and recovered additional packs of suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride linked to a massive 860-kilogram drug haul worth an estimated ₱5.8 billion during pursuit operations in Occidental Mindoro on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

According to reports from the 203rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayapaan) Brigade, troops of the 76th Infantry (Victrix) Battalion conducted follow-up operations that resulted in the apprehension of the two Chinese nationals believed to have been involved in the attempted smuggling activity.

The arrests were made following sustained pursuit operations conducted by soldiers after the discovery of suspected illegal drugs abandoned along the coastline on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

Massive Drug Recovery Operation

The breakthrough came after troops initially recovered 43 sacks of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu, from an abandoned speedboat discovered along the coastline of Occidental Mindoro. According to initial reports from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), the seized illegal drugs are estimated to weigh around 860 kilograms with an estimated market value of ₱5.8 billion, pending confirmation through laboratory examination and inventory procedures.

PDEA officials indicated that the final confirmation of the drug weight and value may take approximately two days as laboratory examination and inventory procedures are completed.

In a significant development during continuing search operations in the area, troops also discovered 30 additional packs of suspected shabu, each estimated to weigh around one kilogram, near the vicinity of the earlier recovery site. The newly recovered packs, believed to be part of the same smuggling attempt, are expected to further increase the total volume and estimated value of the illegal drugs seized in the operation.

Filipino Accomplices Also Arrested

Early Wednesday, two Filipino nationals from Nasugbu, Batangas, were also apprehended by troops while aboard a twin-engine rubber boat seen approaching the area. According to their statements during initial questioning, they were reportedly hired by an individual they believed to be the owner of the aground vessel to locate and rescue the two missing Chinese nationals.

The apprehended individuals were immediately turned over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities for proper investigation and legal processing, according to military reports.

Military Leadership Response

In a statement released Thursday, 203rd Infantry (Bantay Kapayapaan) Brigade Commander Brigadier General Melencio Ragudo said the successful arrest underscores the effectiveness of sustained military operations and close coordination with partner agencies in addressing criminal activities in the region.

“This operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from the threats posed by illegal drug trafficking and transnational criminal activities,” Ragudo said in the military press release.

Meanwhile, 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division Commander Major General Ramon Zagala emphasized the importance of continued vigilance and inter-agency cooperation in combating transnational crimes that threaten communities.

Ongoing Security Operations

Military officials confirmed that troops continue to conduct security operations in the area to secure nearby communities and ensure that illegal drugs and other threats do not reach and endanger the public. The enhanced security measures are part of ongoing efforts to prevent any remaining associates of the smuggling operation from escaping or retrieving additional contraband.

The operation represents one of the largest drug seizures in recent months in the Occidental Mindoro area, highlighting the province’s strategic location as a potential entry point for illegal drugs entering the Philippines from international sources.

Impact on Regional Security

The massive drug bust has significant implications for regional security efforts, particularly in addressing transnational crime networks operating in Philippine waters. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly focused on maritime smuggling routes used by criminal organizations to transport illegal substances into the country.

The involvement of Chinese nationals in the operation reflects the international scope of drug trafficking networks targeting the Philippines. Such operations typically involve sophisticated logistics and coordination across multiple countries, making detection and interdiction challenging for authorities.

For residents of Negros Oriental and neighboring provinces, this operation demonstrates the ongoing threat posed by drug trafficking organizations and the importance of continued cooperation between military forces, law enforcement agencies, and local communities in combating these criminal activities.

Inter-Agency Coordination

The successful operation showcased the effectiveness of coordination between the Philippine Army, PDEA, and other law enforcement agencies. Such multi-agency approaches have become increasingly important in addressing complex criminal operations that span multiple jurisdictions and involve international elements.

Military sources indicated that the operation was part of broader efforts to secure Philippine coastal areas from various threats, including drug trafficking, smuggling, and other criminal activities that exploit maritime boundaries.

Next Steps in Investigation

Authorities are expected to conduct thorough investigations into the backgrounds of the arrested individuals and their connections to larger drug trafficking networks. The information gathered from the suspects could potentially lead to additional arrests and the disruption of broader criminal operations.

PDEA officials are coordinating with international law enforcement agencies to trace the origins of the seized drugs and identify other members of the trafficking network. Such investigations often involve complex international cooperation efforts and may take several months to complete.

The seized drugs will undergo comprehensive laboratory analysis to confirm their composition and street value, while the arrested individuals face charges related to violations of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Local officials in Occidental Mindoro have praised the military’s swift action and emphasized the importance of continued vigilance in protecting coastal communities from criminal activities.
